Just 20 kilometres north of Budapest, a little town nestling the banks of the Danube river offers quiet respite from the bustle of the capital. Walking down its narrow streets lined with art galleries and shops selling antique trinkets or Hungarian handicrafts is like stepping back in time to when life moved at a slower pace.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A Place of Art<\/strong><\/p>\n

Part of the town\u2019s appeal is due to its focus on the arts. Many art museums as well as artists, writers, poets and musician have made their home here over the decades. In the process, they have left their indelible mark on the place. In fact, by the early 1900s, Szentendre was already becoming known as a popular artists\u2019 retreat, leading to the establishment of the \u201cSzentendre School\u201d artists\u2019 colony in the late 1920s. Even today, the town is known as being a vibrant hub of artistic activity.<\/p>\n

Serbian Influences<\/strong><\/p>\n

After the town\u2019s population was largely decimated during Ottoman occupation, many Serbs settled in the town in the late 1600s. As a result, several Serbian Orthodox churches can be found here, including the Blagovestenska (or Annunciation) Serbian Orthodox Church right on the main square. It\u2019s a towering, pale yellow church with a green spire, built in 1752 in a baroque and rococo style.\u00a0The church has been fully restored to it former glory. <\/p>\n

Filming Location<\/strong><\/p>\n

Szentendre is not just a popular tourist destination. Thanks to its proximity to Budapest and the excellent condition of its buildings, it has also become a sought after filming location in Hungary for those seeking historical authenticity and atmosphere.
