This has certainly helped make the city – and country as a whole – one of the most popular shooting destinations for film productions from across the world.

While there are plenty of examples of neo-renaissance and neo-baroque buildings, we’re looking specifically at ones built during the Baroque period.

Spanning roughly from 1600 to 1750, this era emerged against the backdrop of the fall of the Ottoman Empire. With the Habsburgs keen to cement their rule, Baroque architecture flourished in the country. Styles followed Viennese trends with curved facades, soft pastel hues, ornate rococo details and often featured twin-towers topped with copper domes.

Budapest

A key example of this period is St. Anne’s Church located in Batthyány Square, just over the river from the parliament building. Built in 1762 It’s often cited as one of the best examples of Italian Baroque architecture in the city.

Near the banks of the Danube, the Inner-City Parish Church also sports these signature twin towers. Although it was founded in 1048 – with its earliest features incorporating Romanesque as well as gothic elements – it was restored by the Jesuits in the baroque style following a fire in 1723.

The University Church in Budapest. Despite its grandeur, the inspiration for the palace came from humble beginnings. Prince Miklós spent a lot of his time here in what was originally nothing more than a hunting lodge. But the man had big dreams–and funds–to build something quite spectacular.

He wasn’t deterred by set-backs, either.
